GOLDEN, Colo. – In the second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Semifinal match today, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs and Westminster College women's soccer teams finished the match in a double overtime tie and had to settle the match in penalty kicks, where the No. 15 Mountain Lions won 2-1 over the Griffins.
UCCS'
Tori Maydew netted the only goal and had a team high three shots on goal, as
Tarah Patterson both had a team high four shots and two shots on goal for the Mountain Lions.
Aleesa Muir and
Caitlin Esterle played every minute with
Hanna Parado playing just shy of the full minutes (108 min.).
Maydew and the Mountain Lions set the tone in the first half as a free kick from Gregg was placed on the endline where Maydew flew in with a header that gave UCCS an early 1-0 lead in the 9
th minute. The Griffins then came back before the end of the half in the 40
th minute when a shot off the crossbar settled in front of goal for an Allie Millerberg header to tie the match 1-1.
From there, it was 65 scoreless minutes as two tough defensive teams caused unbalanced shots with the goalkeepers for each team spreading themselves thin over frame to maintain the tie.
The Mountain Lions forced 9 shots on goal in the second half but were unable to break Griffins' keeper Hillary Weixler as she bagged all 9 saves.
With neither team willing to break in overtime, and both goalkeepers playing lights out, the match was decided in penalty kicks. In PKs,
Kaylyn Smith made four stops out of the five shots as Patterson and
Amelia Junge buried their shots to lift UCCS 2-1. The last shot came down to Smith where she came through and delivered by diving to the far right post to stop the shot dead, and send the Mountain Lions to the RMAC Championship.
UCCS out-shot Westminster 19-10 (11-3 shots on goal), as the Griffins held the advantage in corner kicks (6-2) and saves (10-2).
For the second straight year, UCCS will play for the RMAC Championship. The Mountain Lions will face Colorado School of Mines for a rematch from the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 12 p.m for the RMAC Conference Title.
