Mountain Lions Edge Out Fort Lewis 2-1 in OT Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team defeated the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks 2-1 in overtime after a thriller in the second half.

The first half represented a scoreless 45 minutes as both teams recorded a shot on goal, with the Skyhawks having out-shot the Mountain Lions 9-4.

In the second half, UCCS was provided with an opportunity in the 81st minute as a Fort Lewis foul in the box gave the Mountain Lions a scoring chance on a penalty kick. UCCS took full advantage of the opportunity as Alex VonHolle netted his seventh goal of the season and gave the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead late in the second half.

With time winding down in the 89th minute, the Skyhawks found a brief window of scoring opportunity and scored with 10 second left at the end of regulation to bring the score even 1-1.

But UCCS made quick work in overtime as they aggressively kept the ball on Fort Lewis' half of the field, and Corey Carabajal scored in the 91st minute as he followed his blocked shot to chip it back in for the game-winner. Carabajal has six goals on the season with two game-winning goals in overtime.

The Skyhawks had the advantage in shots (16-13) and corner kicks (5-1), while the Mountain Lions had the edge in shots on goal (6-4).

UCCS is now 5-4-2 with a 4-3-1 record in the RMAC, sitting in the middle of the pack in the RMAC standings with 13 conference points.

The Mountain Lions look to keep things rolling as they head to Pueblo, Colo. for a Steel and Silver match-up against CSU-Pueblo on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
