Mountain Lions Advance to RMAC Semifinal with Win over Regis

DENVER, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team matched up with Regis University for the third time this season, with the Mountain Lions coming out on top 5-3 over the Rangers to advance to the RMAC Semifinals.

Both Corey Carabajal and Alex VonHolle registered two goals in the match as the Carbajal and VonHolle connection has been trouble for opposing defenses. Mario Mandel added a goal of his own as VonHolle, Sam Bonano, and Jake Demerath registered assists in the match. Diego Ferradas, Carabajal, and VonHolle led the way for the Mountain Lions' by each taking three shots to make up 10 of the 12 team shots.

Each half saw four scores as Regis posted the first score in the opening three minutes of the match. A cross from the right side positioned Joe Mansfield to net the first goal of the game and give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Not phased by the first strike by Regis, the Mountain Lions created a run of their own as the Carbajal and VonHolle connection tied up the match in the 16th minute.

The first UCCS score was just the beginning as Carabajal registered another goal in the 18th minute where VonHolle took over from there to record the next two scores (26th, 54th minutes) and give UCCS a commanding 4-1 lead in the 54th minute.

Regis would fight to stay in the game as they cut the Mountain Lion lead 4-2 in the 60th minute, while trying to create some momentum of their own. UCCS' Mandel tried to halt that momentum by netting the Mountain Lions' fifth goal in the 75th minute to regain a three score lead at 5-2.

With the match winding down, Regis found the back of the net once again in the 77th minute, but ran out of time as the Mountain Lions held on to win 5-3.

UCCS was out-shot in the match 24-12 but made quality shots in the RMAC Quarterfinal match as the Mountain Lions' five shots on goal each found net. UCCS goalkeeper Scott Jensen came to lead the match with six saves.

With the RMAC Quarterfinal win, the Mountain Lions will move on to face No. 1 seed Colorado School of Mines on Friday, Nov. 2 in Golden, Colo. at 1:30 p.m.
