COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team hold on to defeat South Dakota School of Mines and Technology 1-0 Saturday afternoon in a physical match-up on Senior Day.
Senior
Corey Carabajal was recognized at the end of the match as the Mountain Lions registered a win for Carabajal's final regular season home match.
In a match that was decided by only one score, defense was the name of the game as each goalkeeper notched three saves as the Mountain Lions out-shot the Hardrockers 13-9, while UCCS also held the slight advantage in shots on goal 4-3.
Junior
Alex VonHolle led the team with five shots as
Igor O'Rear came off the bench to record three shots of his own and register the game-winning goal for the Mountain Lions.
The opening 45 minutes of the match saw no scoring as each team's backline were providing the contested and blocked shots that they needed to keep shots out of frame. It wouldn't be until the 71
st minute that the Mountain Lions put it all together, as VonHolle placed a quick center ball to
Igor O'Rear who dribbled and found the right inside post for the game-winner.
Haiko Hovak was credited an assist also as he provided a long ball from in front of the center line to VonHolle, which led to the score.
As the standings start to take form for the RMAC Tournament, UCCS currently sits as the fifth seed with a 9-5-3 overall record and an 8-4-2 RMAC record. The Mountain Lions will find out who and when they play later this afternoon, with the release of the 2018 RMAC Men's Soccer Tournament Bracket.
