The Department of Athletics will feature a UCCS student-athlete each week during the 2018-19 academic year. This week's Mountain Lion Spotlight features men's soccer senior Corey Carbajal from Albuquerque, N.M.
Why did you choose UCCS? I choose UCCS for many reasons. First when I came on my visit I fell in love with the campus and have always wanted to come to Colorado. I wanted to choose a school that would allow me to keep my soccer career going as well as get a good education at the same time. Secondly when I was on my visit, the soccer team seemed like a family and took me in like one of their own. It was the perfect environment for me.
What is your major? And why? I am majoring in Finance with a minor in Management. I chose this because my parents always told me I was good at working with people and I saw value in helping people with their finances.
What do you plan to do after you graduate? After I graduate I plan on being a financial adviser. I like to see people succeed and be successful and I believe that being a financial adviser I will help people to be able to reach their goals.
What is your favorite part about being a Mountain Lion? My favorite part of being a Mountain Lion is it feels like a family. No matter where I go there are always amazing people to guide me on and off the field. Also, being a Mountain Lion allows me to do activities that I would not normally do such as the BOOzar, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), canned food drives and many other activities.
What is your favorite part of being on your team here at UCCS? My favorite part of being on the soccer team is the trips and the memories that are made on all of our road trips. The trips we make are all one of a kind and we always make the most of our trips. It's always great to be able to bond with all of my teammates and make the most of our college careers. Being on the soccer team allowed me to meet people from all over and make friends that I will have forever.
What is the most difficult/rewarding part of being a student-athlete? The most difficult thing of being a student athlete is the time commitment and staying on top of your school work while traveling and training every day. The most rewarding part of being a student-athlete is being able to influence people around me in a positive way. For example, guiding freshmen, seeing the expressions on ball boys that meet you before the game and ask for autographs.
