Men's Soccer Falls to Regis in Double Overtime

DENVER, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team dropped a closely contested match with Regis University Thursday as the Mountain Lions fell 3-2 in double overtime at the Regis Match Pitch.

UCCS' goal leader Alex VonHolle provided all the scoring for the Mountain Lions netting two goals (11th and 12th of the season) in the match, as VonHolle and Samuel Gomez accounted for 10 of UCCS' 22 shots. Jake Demerath and Igor O'Rear connected with VonHolle by recording an assist each.

The Mountain Lions started off on a high note and took over the first half of play. High offensive pressure kept the Rangers closed in on their half of the field as VonHolle cutoff the goalkeeper's pass to net the first score of the game in the eighth minute. UCCS' offense came to make a second scoring appearance in the 43rd minute as O'Rear placed a through ball to a striding VonHolle who knocked it in for a 2-0 UCCS lead heading into half.

Regis came to waste little time getting back into the match as the Rangers opened the second half with a quick goal off the Porter Milner flip throw in that led to a header, which cut the UCCS lead 2-1. Then, in the 85th minute, Regis hit the equalizer as Freddie Swales checked it over the keeper to take the match into overtime.

After a back and forth overtime period that led to no scores, Regis came to land the game-winner in the 108th minute off of a corner kick that was deflected up and headed in by Ryan Ebert.

UCCS placed shots all over frame as Rangers goalkeeper Chase Webert made nine saves wih the Mountain Lions holding the edge in shots on goal 11-7. Regis came to hold the advantage in shots (23-22) and corner kicks (7-3) in the match.

With the loss, UCCS still remains the sixth seed rolling into the RMAC Conference Tournament. Saturday, Oct. 27 marks the last regular season match as UCCS takes on South Dakota School of Mines at 11 a.m. for Senior Day.
