Men's Soccer Sweeps MSU Denver 2-0

Colorado Springs, Colo. – With conference play heating up, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team shutout MSU Denver with a score of 2-0.  Today's win and Colorado School of Mines' defeat over Fort Lewis College secured a spot for the Mountain Lions in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.

UCCS (8-4-3, 7-3-2 RMAC) came to register both scores in the first half as team goal leader Alex VonHolle added his 10th goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 25th minute. The Mountain Lions tacked on their second goal a little over two minutes later as a crashing Diego Ferradas scored off a VonHolle center ball for UCCS to take a 2-0 lead. Jack Mills was also credited with an assist on the Ferradas goal, registering his second assist on the season.

Goalkeeper Scott Jensen and the Mountain Lion defense came to hold MSU Denver out of goal for the entirety of the match as Aaron Haefner blocked back-to-back  key shots in front of goal during the second half, to conserve their 2-0 lead. Jensen stretched himself all over the frame recording six saves in 15 shots faced over the course of the match.

MSU Denver held the advantage in shots (15-12), shots on goal (6-5), and corners (5-4). Jensen and the Mountain Lions came to hold the advantage in saves 6-3.

With the win, UCCS leap frogs MSU Denver in the conference standings as the Mountain Lions now sit in fifth with 23 conference points. There is still room to move up in the final two regular season matches as UCCS' next match comes against Regis University on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 3:30 p.m. who sits in third with 26 points in the conference standings.
