#16 UCCS Falls Short to #4 CSM in OT

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A high stakes game between the No. 16 University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team and No. 4 Colorado School of Mines was settled in overtime as the Orediggers won 2-1 Friday night at Mountain Lion Stadium.

Both teams entered the contest undefeated in conference play (8-0-0) as the winner of tonight's game would be in the driver's seat for the conference.

The two nationally ranked teams played lights out defense in the first half as UCCS and CSM would not give an inch while holding each other scoreless. The Orediggers tried multiple times to place a corner kick in front of goal, but UCCS goalkeeper Kaylyn Smith punched and cleared the Mines' corners all while bagging three saves in the opening 45 minutes.

The second half would be a different story as the Orediggers found offensive pressure in the 66th minute where a cluster of bodies in front of the Mountain Lions' goal resulted in a CSM own goal to take the lead over the Mountain Lions 1-0.

Closing in on 10 minutes left in the match, UCCS created quick pressure that put the Orediggers back on their heels as Madison Tominello found Anna Gregg on a cross from the left side that gave Gregg her eighth goal of the season in the 80th minute, and brought the score to 1-1. Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the second half, as the match would be decided in overtime.

In overtime, UCCS kept the time of possession on their side as they quickly recorded two corner kicks and two shots to open up overtime play. But in the 98th minute, the Orediggers found an opening on the Mountain Lions' side of the field as Mines struck a ball from the center line that found its way over the goalkeeper, and a streaking Jennifer Kendall knocked it in for the game-winner.

A tough defensive match between two nationally ranked teams resulted in the Orediggers having the advantage in shots (15-9) and shots on goal (5-7), with the Mountain Lions holding the advantage in saves (5-4) and corner kicks (7-4).

The No. 16 Mountain Lions will host Colorado Christian University on Monday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. for their last home game of the regular season.
