COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Playing in their home opener, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team fell 5-4 in a hard-fought double overtime game to Eastern New Mexico.
The Greyhounds found the back of the net first in the 30
th minute before
Jake McAllister scored his first goal of the season 11 minutes later. However, Eastern New Mexico re-took the lead two minutes when Christopher Mesquita headed his shot past UCCS goalkeeper
David Meyer.
In the second half, the Greyhounds tacked on two more goals in the 51
st and 62
nd minutes to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
In the 72
nd minute,
Blake Barnes opened his account for the season after converting a penalty kick to make it a 4-2 game. Then just six minutes later, Conor Langenhahn found the back of the net after sending home a rebounded shot. Then with less than a minute remaining, McAllister scored off a header to force the extra time.
After a scoreless first 10 minutes of overtime, the Grayhounds found the game-winner at the 107:54 mark with a goal from Nicolai Alstrom to seal the non-conference win.
McAllister finished the night with a game-high seven shots, placing three on target to go along with his two goals for UCCS. Teammate
Blake Barnes also had a busy game he was credited with two assists in addition to his penalty kick goal.
The result puts the Mountain Lions at 0-3-0 to start the year as they are off until Monday when they host Dixie State at 10 a.m. inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
