UCCS Sweeps Adams State, Edge Posts 47 Assists

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs redshirt freshman Raelynn Edge recorded the best performance for a setter in a three-set match since 2004 and led the Mountain Lions to its second sweep of the weekend tonight against Adams State. UCCS (6-6, 3-1 RMAC) won in 25-23, 35-33 and 25-17 sets against the Grizzlies (6-7, 2-2 RMAC).

Edge finished with 47 assists, the fifth-best performance in a three-set match in UCCS history and the best since 2004 when sets went to 30 points. She was seven points off the record set by Stephanie Shalosky against Chadron State in 2001.

UCCS never trailed in the first set after scoring the first four points, but Adams State kept the set close and pulled within a point at 23-22. Josie Russell scored the final Mountain Lion points with a pair of kills as UCCS won the first set 25-23.

The Mountain Lions scored six straight points and built a 21-14 lead late in the second set, but the Grizzlies responded with their own six-point rally and closed the gap to 21-20. UCCS reached set point at 24-23 after a kill from Aly Morgan, but Adams State used a kill and took advantage of an attack error to earn set point itself at 25-24. The Grizzlies had set point three more times up to 28-27 before UCCS regained the set point opportunity at 29-28 on a kill from Russell and a block from Russell and Allegra Shippy. The Grizzlies regained the advantage at 31-30 and maintained it at 32-31 before the Mountain Lions scored four of the next five points on kills to secure the extended set at 35-33.

Edge recorded 22 of her 47 assists in the second set, and Alyssa Brinton led a balanced offensive attack with nine kills in the set. The Mountain Lions recorded their best hitting of the night in the second set at .339 with 26 of their 35 points off kills.

UCCS gradually opened a 12-7 lead in the third set and then used a five-point run to extend it to 17-9. The Grizzlies would only be able to play within five points of the Mountain Lions as the UCCS defense held Adams State to a negative hitting performance for the 25-17 set and the third sweep in the four-match conference season.

Taylor Hamilton led the attackers for the second straight night with 15 kills, while Brinton added 14, Taylor Smith made 12 and Russell finished with 10 and a team-high five blocks. Natasha Habert led the Mountain Lions with 16 digs.

UCCS will return to the road next weekend for a Sept. 29, match at Colorado State-Pueblo, and a Sept. 30, match at New Mexico Highlands.
