Hamilton Leads UCCS to Sweep of Fort Lewis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Taylor Hamilton finished with 21 kills with a .474 hitting percentage to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in a 3-0 sweep of Fort Lewis tonight in the Gallogly Events Center. The Mountain Lions (5-6, 2-1 RMAC) won in 25-18, 25-16 and 25-16 scores against the Skyhawks (6-5, 1-2 RMAC).

UCCS and Fort Lewis tied seven times to an 11-11 tie in the first set before a kill from Alyssa Brinton sparked a 10-4 run for the Mountain Lions. Hamilton made 11 of her 21 kills in the first set with no errors on 18 attacks for a .611 percentage as the Mountain Lions claimed a 25-18 win in the opening set.

The Mountain Lions gradually opened an 8-5 lead in the second set and then used an 11-2 run later in the period for a 19-10 advantage. UCCS hit .378 as a team in the second set in a balanced offensive attack as five Mountain Lions finished with three or more kills in a 25-16 victory.

UCCS never trailed in the third set, where Hamilton added another six kills and two blocks for the Mountain Lions. Taylor Smith made four kills off six attacks as UCCS used a late 8-2 rally to secure the match sweep on the 25-16 set win.

Hamilton's 21 kills tied for the third-best performance in a three-set match in UCCS history, in her fourth 20-kill performance in the last five matches. She added two service aces and three blocks for 25 points, the second-best performance in program history for a three-set match. Brinton finished with 13 kills and a .345 hitting percentage.

Raelynn Edge made 42 assists, two away from a top-10 performance in program history. She is averaging 10.49 assists per set this season and is on pace for fifth in program records. She also added three kills and five digs.

Natasha Habert led the back line with 15 digs and Julie Ward added 10. Habert became the third Mountain Lion in program history to surpass 1,500 career digs tonight with 1,505 total.

UCCS will return to the Gallogly Events Center on Saturday for a 5 p.m., contest against Adams State. The Grizzlies (6-6, 2-1 RMAC) fell in three sets to MSU Denver tonight.
