UCCS Sweeps CSU-Pueblo in First Doubleheader of Series

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs used a pair of walk-off performances in the seventh inning to earn a doubleheader sweep of Colorado State-Pueblo in the first games of the series at Mountain Lion Field. UCCS (7-20, 6-16 RMAC) won the first game 3-2 and the second game 2-1 against the ThunderWolves (12-18, 9-13 RMAC) as the Mountain Lions improved to 3-1 in the last four games.

CSU-Pueblo took a 2-0 lead after the top of the fifth inning in game one but Lexi Belligan used her first pitch in the bottom of the fifth to the tie game on a two-run home run to left-center field. Stephanie Chitkowski and the UCCS defense retired the ThunderWolves in order in the sixth inning and allowed only a walk in the top of the seventh to take a tied 2-2 game into the bottom half of the inning.

Melissa Martinek reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, but took the first out of the inning for UCCS on a force out at second base as Whitney Weber reached on the fielder's choice. Belligan singled up the middle, and a fielding error by the center fielder allowed Weber to score in the 3-2 victory in game one. Chitkowski earned her fifth win of the season in her fifth complete game of the year with four strikeouts.

Martinek hit her sixth home run of the season in the third inning to break a 0-0 tie in the second game, and CSU-Pueblo tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth. The Mountain Lions threatened to retake the in the bottom of the fifth as Martinek reached third with two outs, but a ground-out to shortstop ended the chance. Both defenses kept teams out of scoring position in the sixth inning as it stayed a 1-1 going into the seventh inning.

The ThunderWolves put a runner on base with a one-out single in the seventh. CSU-Pueblo hit a double down the left field line that provided the chance for the ThunderWolves to take the lead, but a relay throw from left field to home plate was in time to tag out the runner for the second out. A fly out to center field ended the top of the seventh with the game tied at 1-1.

The Mountain Lions' first two batters struck out in the bottom of the seventh before Martinek hit a double down the right field line. Weber hit a single into short center field to drive Martinek home in the 2-1 victory and secure at least a split in the four-game series. The split will also secure at least a split in the all-sport Steel & Silver Series between the two schools in the first spring points of the year.

Christina Patton earned her first victory of the season in a complete game appearance. Martinek scored both of the runs in the second game with a two-for-four performance at the plate and Claire Nibbe went two-for-three in her fourth multi-hit game of the season.

UCCS and CSU-Pueblo will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
