COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
Lexi Belligan hit a grand slam as part of a 10-run inning for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in game one as the Mountain Lions (8-21, 7-17 RMAC) earned the series win against Colorado State-Pueblo with a split in today's doubleheader at Mountain Lion Field. UCCS won the first game 13-2 in five innings before the ThunderWolves (13-10, 10-14 RMAC) took the second game 12-4 in six innings in the run-rule decisions.
Claire Nibbe hit her second home run of the season and started the scoring for the Mountain Lions with a three-run home run in the first inning of game one. CSU-Pueblo responded with a two-run home run to left field in the second inning and cut the UCCS lead down to 3-2.
The Mountain Lions maintained the 3-2 lead to the bottom of the fourth inning when UCCS scored 10 runs on eight hits and two errors.
Kylie Barnard led off the inning with a solo home run, and the next three Mountain Lions reached base to load the bases with no outs. A force out at home plate kept the bases loaded with one out and set up Belligan's grand slam for an 8-2 lead.
Makenna Smith hit a single that scored one run, and an error on the play added another run, while back-to-back doubles from
Nikki Hoffman and Martinek scored the ninth and tenth runs of the inning for the 13-2 lead.
The ThunderWolves put a runner on third with two outs in the top of the fifth inning before a ball hit to Barnard at first base ended the game with the largest win of the season. Half of the Mountain Lions' 12 hits were for extra bases and
Stephanie Chitkowski evened her pitching record at 6-6 with her third win in the last four decisions.
CSU-Pueblo manufactured one run in the first inning of the second game and UCCS took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning off of four hits. The Mountain Lions maintained their lead after the third inning before the ThunderWolves scored six runs in the fourth to retake the lead at 7-2. CSU-Pueblo loaded the bases in the fifth with no outs but UCCS held the ThunderWolves to only one run, but a grand slam in the sixth pushed the lead to 12-2 for CSU-Pueblo.
Karli Hughes hit a two-out, two-run home run as a pinch hitter on her first pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull the Mountain Lions within eight runs at 12-4. Martinek hit a single to center field, but she came up short in attempt to gain an extra base on the play on the tag at second base for the third out.
The 3-1 record for UCCS this weekend marked the first series win of the season, and it also provided four points in the 2016-17 Steel & Silver Series between the two institutions. CSU-Pueblo maintains a 26-14 lead in the all-sport competition after the first spring results in the series.
The Mountain Lions will finish a 12-game home stretch this weekend with a four-game series against Adams State April 8-9.
