Strong Second Game Offense Leads to Split at Regis

DENVER – Tyler Matheny led a 16-hit team performance with a three-for-four performance and three RBIs as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs earned a split with Regis in a pair of seven-inning games today. The Mountain Lions (7-7, 2-1 RMAC) fell 11-0 in the first game before a 10-1 victory in the second game against the Rangers (7-6, 1-2 RMAC).

UCCS loaded the bases in the first inning but a two-run home run by Scott Martinez in the second inning provided the first runs for the Mountain Lions. Matheny added to the lead with a two-RBI single down the right-field line in the third inning and UCCS made it a 9-0 lead after a five-run, six-hit performance in the fifth inning. Bryan Chapin scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning for a 10-0 lead, but Regis broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh with a run with two outs in the 10-1 decision.

Matheny's performance came in his first multi-hit game of the season, while Martinez, Chapin, Zach Hall, John Mallon and Colin Ludwig finished with two hits each. Will Felton struck out six batters in a five-inning start for his first win of the season.

The win came after the Mountain Lions struggled at the plate with only two hits in the 11-0 open to the day. Nick Chavez and Hall recorded the two hits and Cam Aufderheide took the loss on the mound. Daniel Silva earned four strikeouts in relief in the no decision.

UCCS and Regis will finish the four-game series tomorrow in a nine-inning game at noon.
