DENVER –
Zach Hall and
Tyler Matheny both turned in three-hit days while
Colin Cicere struck out six batters as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs earned the series win with a 7-4 victory against Regis today. The Mountain Lions (8-7, 3-1 RMAC) finished with a 3-1 record against the Rangers (7-7, 1-3 RMAC) in the first conference series of the season.
The Mountain Lions finished the series with 10 runs and 30 hits in the final two games after 14 hits today.
Jamie Crabtree and
Matthew McDermott each went two-for-five and eight of the nine Mountain Lions in the batting order finished with hits.
John Mallon hit his first home run since the season-opener at Cal Poly Pomona with a two-run home run to left-center field and started a four-run first inning for the Mountain Lions. Regis used three straight doubles in the third inning to make it a 4-2 game against UCCS.
Matheny scored on a single to center field by
Efrain Medina in the fourth inning and Hall led off the sixth inning with a home run to make it a four-run lead against at 6-2.
Scott Martinez expanded the lead to 7-2 with a single to score
Jamie Crabtree in the seventh. The Rangers scored twice in the eighth inning but couldn't close the gap as UCCS claimed the series in the 7-4 victory.
UCCS finished the first weekend in second in the conference standings and one game behind Colorado Mesa. The Mountain Lions and Mavericks will meet at Spurgeon Field in Colorado Springs for a four-game series March 10-12.
