Mountain Lions Split Final Day of Series Against Colorado Christian

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Claire Nibbe and Whitney Weber both combined for three hits in today's doubleheader as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team split the second day of its series against Colorado Christian at Mountain Lion Field. UCCS (5-20, 4-16 RMAC) earned its first conference split of the season with a 5-3 win in the first game before a 4-1 loss in the second game against the Cougars (20-12, 10-6 RMAC).

Colorado Christian took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but the Mountain Lions held the Cougars to only one base runner in the next two innings. UCCS recorded four straight hits in the third and took a 4-1 lead, and expanded it to 5-1 after a double from Melissa Martinek scored Amanda Nobles in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Mountain Lions retired Colorado Christian in order in the fifth and sixth innings before the Cougars scored two runs in the seventh as UCCS took the first game 5-3.

Stephanie Chitkowski earned the win with the complete game and struck out four batters. Nibbe went two-for-three with a run and RBI while Weber went two-for-four with a run.

Both teams were scoreless through the first two innings in the final game of the series before Colorado Christian put together five straight hits in the third inning for a 4-0 lead. Meghan Waidler hit a double into left-center field and scored Weber from first base in the bottom half of the inning, but it would mark the only runs for either team in the 4-1 decision. Neither team would put a runner into scoring position in the final four innings as the teams only left a combined five runners on base.

The Mountain Lions will continue their 12-game home stretch with a four-game series against Colorado State-Pueblo April 1-2. The ThunderWolves (12-16, 9-11 RMAC) went 1-3 against Regis in a four –game series this weekend in Pueblo, Colo.
