COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs hit four home runs in game one, with a pair from
Melissa Martinek, as the Mountain Lions earned a split with Colorado Christian in today's doubleheader. UCCS (4-19, 3-15 RMAC) won 12-3 in game one before a 14-3 loss in game two against the Cougars (19-11, 9-5 RMAC) in a pair of run-rule decisions in five innings.
The first three Mountain Lions reached base in the first game with two walks and a single, and the leadoff batters in Martinek and
Whitney Weber scored to make it an early 2-0 lead. Colorado Christian tied the game in the top of the third inning before Martinek hit a solo home run and sparked a five-run inning for the Mountain Lions in the bottom of the inning.
Kylie Barnard hit a two-run home run to cap the scoring for a 7-2 UCCS lead going into the fourth.
Martinek hit her second home run of the game in the fourth inning and Weber scored her second run after she took advantage of a throwing error as UCCS built a 9-3 lead.
Stephanie Chitkowski struck out the side in the top of the fifth inning and
Megan Duffy hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to secure the run-rule decision with a lead of eight runs or more by the fifth inning.
The Cougars hit their own three-run home run in the first inning and controlled the second game in the 14-3 decision. UCCS drew a pair of walks, hit a single and capitalized on an error to score one run in the first inning, and Weber scored runs in the third and fifth innings in the loss.
UCCS and Colorado Christian will finish the series with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch in game one is set for 11 a.m.
