ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team opened their season with a 7-6 setback against Montana State-Billings on Wednesday at the Dixie State Easton Classic.
The Mountain Lions took a 5-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning when
Melissa Martinek and
Lexi Belligan scored off a single by
Claire Nibbe.
MSU-Billings rallied with three runs over the next two innings before
Whitney Weber crossed home plate off a Martinek fly out to right field.
The Yellowjackets evened the game in the sixth when Katlyn Stringari homered, bringing in two runs. MSU-Billings then found the winning run in the bottom of the seventh when Megan Dettling hit her third home run of the game over the right center fence.
For UCCS,
Stephanie Chitkowski tallied five strikeouts while allowing seven runs on 10 hits. Both
Nikki Hoffman and Webber led the Mountain Lions with two runs.
The Mountain Lions are back in action Thursday when they play a double-header against Central Washington at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. against Concordia (Ore.).
