COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A pair of freshman guards, Tatum Tellin and Maddie Golla, led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in scoring and rebounding, respectively, as the Mountain Lions (0-2) fell in a 69-61 overtime contest to Wayne State (3-2). Tellin led UCCS with 16 while Golla pulled down nine rebounds.
The Wildcats opened a 7-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game and expanded their lead to nine points at 19-10 early in the second quarter. The Mountain Lions assembled a 12-4 run and pulled within a point at 25-24 with 2:23 to play in the half, and stayed within a possession at halftime, 31-28.
Wayne State maintained its lead through most of the third quarter before the Mountain Lions tied the game twice in the final two minutes of the period. A jumper by Joey Sale with 34 seconds left in the quarter marked the start of an 11-2 Mountain Lion run into the fourth quarter as UCCS built a 53-46 advantage with 5:50 to play in regulation.
The Wildcats scored seven straight in a three-minute stretch and tied the game at 54-54 with 1:48 to play in the quarter.
Shanah Leaf put the Mountain Lions back ahead at 56-54 on a layup with 57 seconds to go, and Wayne State tied the game again on a pair of free throws 19 seconds later. UCCS suffered a shot clock violation and then the defense held Wayne State scoreless on its final possession to force overtime tied at 56-56.
Emily Seifert put the Mountain Lions ahead at 61-60 on a free throw after being fouled on a made layup with 2:38 left in overtime, but the Wildcats scored the final nine points of the game as UCCS struggled from the field in the final minutes of the period. Â Wayne State shot 60 percent from the field and went seven-for-eight at the free throw line in the extra five minutes to secure the 69-61 decision.
Tellin shot a perfect six-for-six from the floor with four 3-pointers. Leaf added 15 points and went six-for-10 from the field and three-for-six at the free throw line. Gaibler made eight rebounds as UCCS finished with a 45-34 rebounding advantage today.
UCCS will go on the road for the first time in a regional contest at Fort Hays State Nov. 17. Â The Tigers started the season 2-0 last weekend
