Freshmen Lead UCCS in Overtime Setback to Wayne State

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A pair of freshman guards, Tatum Tellin and Maddie Golla, led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in scoring and rebounding, respectively, as the Mountain Lions (0-2) fell in a 69-61 overtime contest to Wayne State (3-2). Tellin led UCCS with 16 while Golla pulled down nine rebounds.

The Wildcats opened a 7-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game and expanded their lead to nine points at 19-10 early in the second quarter. The Mountain Lions assembled a 12-4 run and pulled within a point at 25-24 with 2:23 to play in the half, and stayed within a possession at halftime, 31-28.

Wayne State maintained its lead through most of the third quarter before the Mountain Lions tied the game twice in the final two minutes of the period. A jumper by Joey Sale with 34 seconds left in the quarter marked the start of an 11-2 Mountain Lion run into the fourth quarter as UCCS built a 53-46 advantage with 5:50 to play in regulation.

The Wildcats scored seven straight in a three-minute stretch and tied the game at 54-54 with 1:48 to play in the quarter. Shanah Leaf put the Mountain Lions back ahead at 56-54 on a layup with 57 seconds to go, and Wayne State tied the game again on a pair of free throws 19 seconds later. UCCS suffered a shot clock violation and then the defense held Wayne State scoreless on its final possession to force overtime tied at 56-56.

Emily Seifert put the Mountain Lions ahead at 61-60 on a free throw after being fouled on a made layup with 2:38 left in overtime, but the Wildcats scored the final nine points of the game as UCCS struggled from the field in the final minutes of the period.  Wayne State shot 60 percent from the field and went seven-for-eight at the free throw line in the extra five minutes to secure the 69-61 decision.

Tellin shot a perfect six-for-six from the floor with four 3-pointers. Leaf added 15 points and went six-for-10 from the field and three-for-six at the free throw line. Gaibler made eight rebounds as UCCS finished with a 45-34 rebounding advantage today.

UCCS will go on the road for the first time in a regional contest at Fort Hays State Nov. 17.  The Tigers started the season 2-0 last weekend
