UCCS Wins Sixth Straight Home Match

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Alyssa Brinton led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs with 17 kills as the Mountain Lions won their sixth straight home match in a 3-1 victory against Westminster tonight. UCCS (9-7, 6-2 RMAC) won in 25-23, 23-25, 25-19 and 25-13 sets against the Griffins (5-10, 2-5 RMAC) in the Gallogly Events Center.

UCCS put together a 7-1 run in the first set for a 16-10 lead. The Griffins pulled within a point at 23-22 at the end of a 4-1 rally, but kills from Brinton and Josie Russell secured the 25-23 victory. Brinton made eight of her kills in the first set and hit .727.

The Mountain Lions built a 20-16 lead late in the second set and maintained the four-point lead through 22-18. Westminster scored seven of the final eight points of the set, including the last four, to even the match at 1-1 on the 25-23 decision.

Both teams stayed within two points of each other in the third set, with UCCS keeping the edge for most of the set and led 18-17 late in the set. The Mountain Lions took advantage of Griffin errors along with three blocks and a kill from Taylor Hamilton to close the set on a 7-2 run. Hamilton made six kills and hit .857 in the set.

UCCS scored the first three points of the fourth set and built a 13-5 lead. The Mountain Lions led start-to-finish with a .467 team hitting percentage in the set in a 25-13 victory and the 3-1 match win.

Brinton's 17 kills matched her season-high and were her most in a four-set match since Oct. 15, 2016. She hit .567 in the eighth-best performance in a four-set match in program history. She added three blocks and six digs on defense.

Hamilton finished with 16 kills and a .433 hitting percentage and led both teams with six blocks and three service aces. Taylor Smith added 10 kills in her second straight match with double-digit kills.

Raelynn Edge continued to improve her average in assists with 47 tonight and is on pace to finish fourth in UCCS records with 10.95 per set this season. Natasha Habert made 18 digs for the back line and improved her career total to 1,593. She needs 78 to tie for second in program history.

The Mountain Lions will be off for more than a week before their next match on Friday, Oct. 13, against Colorado State-Pueblo. UCCS won the first match of the season in a 3-0 victory on Sept. 29.
