COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
Natasha Habert matched her three-set career high with 21 digs as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs extended its home win streak to seven matches in a 3-0 sweep of Colorado State-Pueblo. The Mountain Lions (10-7, 7-2 RMAC) won in 25-20, 29-27 and 25-23 sets against the ThunderWolves (3-14, 2-6 RMAC).
UCCS put together an 8-1 run for a 10-6 lead in the first set and led the rest of the set for a 25-20 victory. The Mountain Lions took a 21-19 lead in the second set, but the ThunderWolves responded with a 5-1 rally and reached set point at 24-22. A kill from
Taylor Smith and a service ace from
Natasha Habert tied the set at 24-24, and UCCS retook the lead on a block from
Alyssa Brinton and
Taylor Hamilton at 27-26. CSU-Pueblo tied the match at 27-27, but the Mountain Lions scored the last two points to secure the 2-0 match lead on a 29-27 set win.
The third set featured 11 ties and four lead changes as both teams stayed within two points of each other until CSU-Pueblo opened a 22-19 lead late in the set. The Mountain Lions rallied with four straight points to retake the lead at 23-22, but a UCCS attack error tied the set again at 23-23.
Grace Nelson and Smith finished the match with back-to-back kills in the 25-23 win and the 3-0 sweep.
Habert moved past the 1,600-dig mark in her career and increased her total to 1,614. She needs 57 to tie for second in UCCS career records with Laura Meeter. Tonight was her third 21-dig performance in a three-set match in her career.
Brinton led the offense with 19 kills and hit .326, and was joined in double-digit kills with Smith's 11.
Raelynn Edge made 42 assists and continued to expand on her UCCS freshman season record with 677 this season. She is 280 assists away from tying for No. 10 in overall records.
Taylor Hamilton led the blockers with four and added nine kills on offense.
The win tonight secured four Steel & Silver points for UCCS in the all-sport competition against CSU-Pueblo. The Mountain Lions swept the ThunderWolves two weeks in Pueblo, Colo.
UCCS will remain at home tomorrow night for a 5 p.m., match against New Mexico Highlands. The Cowgirls (5-9, 2-7 RMAC) fell in three sets at MSU Denver tonight.
