Balanced Offense Leads to Sweep at South Dakota Mines

RAPID CITY, S.D. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior middle blocker Taylor Hamilton led a balanced offensive effort as the Mountain Lions (12-10, 9-5 RMAC) earned a sweep of South Dakota Mines tonight at the King Center. UCCS won in 25-22, 25-18 and 25-23 set wins against the Hardrockers (3-21, 1-12 RMAC).

Hamilton finished with 13 kills and a .429 hitting percentage while Josie Russell and Alyssa Brinton both added 10 kills. Raelynn Edge made 39 assists and surpassed 900 assists this season with 918 this year. She needs 39 to tie for No. 10 in UCCS season records. Natasha Habert made 19 digs on defense and surpassed the 1,700 mark in her career. She has 1,712 and needs 82 to tie the record set 10 years ago.

The Mountain Lions and Hardrockers stayed within two points of each other until South Dakota Mines scored five straight points for a 17-14 lead in the first set. UCCS answered with its own five-point run within a larger 9-3 rally as the Mountain Lions closed out the set for a 25-22 victory.

UCCS took a 2-0 match lead after three separate runs of four or more points led to a 25-18 set win. The Mountain Lions scored six straight points late in the third set for a 21-14 lead and maintained the seven-point lead at 24-17 advantage for match point. South Dakota Mines scored the next six points and threatened a fourth set before Russell ended the match on a kill to the middle of the back row for a 25-23 set win and the ninth sweep of the season.

The Mountain Lions will close out the regular season at home with four matches in the next two weeks at the Gallogly Events Center. UCCS starts the final stretch Nov. 3, in a 7 p.m., match against Colorado Mesa.
