COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
Taylor Hamilton led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs with nine kills and seven blocks as the Mountain Lions pushed Colorado Mesa in each set but fell 3-0 to the Mavericks tonight in the Gallogly Events Center. UCCS (12-11, 9-6 RMAC) dropped 25-19, 29-27 and 25-23 sets to the Mavericks (17-6, 11-4 RMAC).
Both teams put together long rallies early in the first set and tied five times through 7-7. The Mavericks gradually opened a 12-9 lead and then put together a 6-2 run later in the set for an 18-13 advantage. UCCS held off three Colorado Mesa set point opportunities before the Mavericks put a kill down for a 25-19 decision.
The Mountain Lions rallied from a 24-21 deficit in the second set and tied the set at 24-24. Colorado Mesa regained set point at 25-24 before a kill from Grace Nelson and blocks from Raelynn Edge and Hamilton provided the first UCCS set point opportunity at 26-25. The Mountain Lions reached set point again at 27-26 before Colorado Mesa scored three straight points for the 29-27 set.
The Mavericks took a 9-5 lead in the third set before a four-point Mountain Lion swing tied the set at 9-9. UCCS took the lead after three straight points at 16-15 and opened a 23-19 advantage at the end of a 5-1 rally. The Mavericks earned the final six points of the night off four kills, a service ace and a block to secure the 3-0 match on the 25-23 set.
UCCS earned balanced offense with three Mountain Lions at eight kills behind Hamilton's nine. Josie Russell made eight along with three blocks, Alyssa Brinton added eight along with 15 digs and Grace Nelson made eight with a.300 hitting percentage.
Natasha Habert shared the team lead with 15 digs and increased her career total to 1,727. She needs 67 to tie the UCCS career record. Edge finished 33 assists and increased her season total to 951. She needs six to tie for No. 10 in UCCS season records.
UCCS will remain at home Saturday for a 5 p.m., match against Western State. The Mountaineers (2-22, 1-14 RMAC) fell in three sets to MSU Denver tonight.
