COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs continued to shoot strong from the three-point line at home with a 50 percent mark today to earn an 81-72 victory against South Dakota Mines at the Gallogly Events Center. Senior forward
Brittany Hernandez led the Mountain Lions with 29 points and a career-high six assists.
The Mountain Lions never trailed and were tied for the Hardrockers for 67 seconds tonight. UCCS put together an 18-5 spanning the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter to build a 34-18 lead with 6 minutes, 24 seconds left in the quarter.
South Dakota Mines whittled a 16-points Mountain Lion lead with 3:15 to play in the game to a seven-point game with 14 seconds to play, but Hernandez used her second trip to the free throw line to solidify the nine-point win with two free throws.
Hernandez led the Mountain Lions with seven blocks and surpassed her previous career-high of five assists set in the third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2015. She went 11-of-19 from the field and was four-of-seven from the three-point line.
Anna Schwecke led the Mountain Lion bench with 13 points in her best performance since the opening weekend against Oklahoma Christian.
Tori Fisher added 12 points with a pair of three-pointers.
UCCS has made more than 50 percent of three-pointers in back-to-back games after 52 percent last night against Black Hills State. It's the first time the Mountain Lions have shot that well in back-to-back games since Nov. 28-29, 2014, and the first in back-to-back conference games since Feb. 25-26, 2011.
The Mountain Lions will be back on the road next weekend, and will face Chadron State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles (1-4, 1-1 RMAC) won tonight 69-64 against Colorado Christian.
