UCCS Wins 10th Straight Home Game in 73-65 Win Against Mines

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Brittany Hernandez recorded her second straight double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Tori Fisher added another 20 points as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team extended its home win streak to 10 games with a 73-65 victory against Colorado Mines.

It was the third straight 20-point game for Hernandez and her fifth in the last six games. Fisher's 20 points were her most this season and her fourth 20-point game of her career. Jen Vigil added 10 points and led the Mountain Lions with four steals.

UCCS and Colorado Mines played a back-and-forth game in the first quarter with five lead changes before the Mountain Lions took a nine-point advantage at 29-20 with 3:41 to play in the second quarter. UCCS held the Orediggers to two-of-six shooting from the field for the remained of the quarter to take a 29-25 lead into halftime.

The Mountain Lions never let go of the lead in the second half, but couldn't take a significant lead against the Orediggers. The Vigil sisters made back-to-back three-pointers late in the third quarter to make it an eight-point, 44-36 lead with 2:45 left in the quarter, but Colorado Mines made it a four-point game a minute-and-a-half later. The Orediggers pulled within two points at 67-65 with 1:14 to play, but UCCS went four-of-six at the free throw line and held Colorado Mines scoreless in the final 1:14 to secure the 73-65 and the first home win against Mines since 2010.

UCCS shot 57 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game with 50 percent. It was the third 50 percent game of the season and first since the home-opener against Black Hills State on Dec. 2. Fisher paced the shooting with a nine-of-13 performance, and added eight rebounds and two blocks on the defensive side.

The Mountain Lions will be off for the Division II national holiday break and return to the court on Dec. 30 in a 5:30 p.m., game against Western State. The Mountaineers (3-7, 2-4 RMAC) fell 63-43 to Colorado State-Pueblo tonight.
