COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
Brittany Hernandez finished with her 22nd career double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs extended its home winning streak to nine games after a 69-53 win tonight against Colorado Christian. The Mountain Lions (7-4, 4-1 RMAC) out-rebounded the Cougars (3-7, 1-4 RMAC) by a 48-23 margin tonight.
UCCS built an early 11-2 lead against Colorado Christian, and after the Cougars used a seven-point run to cut the lead down to two points at 13-11, the Mountain Lions retook a seven-point lead at the end of the first quarter with a buzzer-beater three-pointer from
Kelly O'Flannigan. UCCS led by at least two possessions throughout the second quarter and held 34-29 advantage at halftime.
The Cougars took its first lead of the game with back-to-back three-pointers to open the third quarter and eventually led 37-35 with 7:55 to play in the quarter. UCCS scored the next 11 points, with seven from Hernandez, to retake the lead at 46-37. Colorado Christian cut it down to a three-point game with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter at 56-53, but the Mountain Lions scored the final 13 points of the game to claim the victory.
Hernandez scored 25 points for the third time in the last four games and made a season-high 13 rebounds. She equaled Colorado Christian's block total with two tonight and tied for the team highs with three assists and two steals. O'Flannigan finished with a career-high 11 points on four-of-eight shooting from the field and a trio of three-pointers.
Jen Vigil scored all of her nine points from the three-point line and matched her season-high with seven rebounds.
The 25-rebound margin for UCCS marked the largest since the same margin against Western New Mexico on Jan. 30, 2015. The 48 rebounds tonight were the most this season.
UCCS moved into a tie for second in the RMAC standings with tonight's win and Colorado Mesa's loss at Colorado State-Pueblo. The Mountain Lions are in a four-way tie for second and will host one of those teams, Colorado Mines, on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The Orediggers (8-6, 4-1 RMAC) won 59-57 at MSU Denver earlier tonight.
