WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs shot 52 percent from the three-point line and never trailed in an 82-61 victory this afternoon against Oklahoma Christian at Fugate Gymnasium. Four student-athletes finished with 10 or more points for the Mountain Lions, led by 15 points each from
Brittany Hernandez and
Anna Schwecke.
UCCS (2-0) went 14-of-27 at the three-point line, with four 3-pointers from
Jennah Knafelc, a three-of-three performance from
Kelly O'Flannigan and another triplet of three-pointers from
Jen Vigil. The Mountain Lions shot 49 percent overall from the field, led by a seven-of-10 mark by Schwecke.
UCCS finished the second and third quarters with extended runs, a 14-2 rally in the second quarter and a 13-2 stretch in the third. The Mountain Lions held the Eagles to seven points in the second quarter and extended their lead with 20-plus points in the first and third quarters. UCCS led by at least 10 points for the final 13 minutes of the game.
Tori Fisher led the defense with nine rebounds and Schwecke added seven. Schwecke finished her first collegiate weekend with 80 percent from the field, 12.5 points and eight rebounds per game. Hernandez added five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots for the Mountain Lions. On the offensive side, Knafelc finished with 12 points and
Jen Vigil scored 11. Hernandez and Vigil were both selected to the all-tournament team for leading UCCS to a 2-0 start.
UCCS is 2-0 for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The Mountain Lions scored 70 or more points in the first two games of a season for the fifth time in program history and the third time in the last five.
UCCS will stay on the road next weekend for the Texas Woman's Pioneer Premier Nov. 19-20. The Mountain Lions will take on Midwestern State on Nov. 19 and host Texas Woman's on Nov. 20, in Denton, Texas.
