STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs led No. 10 Tarleton State at halftime and out-rebounded Tarleton to push the Texans in a 73-64 setback tonight at Wisdom Gym.
Elijah Ross led the Mountain Lions with 15 points and four assists.
Tarleton State took an early 19-6 advantage before the Mountain Lions put together 15 straight points to hold a 21-19 lead with 8 minutes, 23 seconds, left in the first half. UCCS expanded the lead to seven points at 32-25 with 3:57 left in the half. The Texans closed out the half on a 9-2 run as the Mountain Lions kept a 34-32 lead at halftime.
Tarleton State retook a two-point lead in the first 64 seconds of the second half, but the Mountain Lions scored the nest seven points to take a 43-38 advantage with 14:49 to play. The Texans scored the next 10 points for a 48-43 lead, and UCCS cut the game back down to one point at 54-53 with 6:52 on a jumper from Ross. He converted on a pair of free throws two minutes later to keep the game at a point at 56-55.
TreShawn Wilford kept Tarleton State within a possession with a fastbreak layup with four minutes to play to make it a 59-57 game. The Texans made nine of their last 10 free throw attempts down the stretch as the Mountain Lions worked to retake the lead but came up short in the nine-point loss to a top-10 program.
UCCS out-rebounded Tarleton State 39-35, and shot four percentage points better from the field, 43.4-39.4. Today's game matched last year's margin in a season that marked a national quarterfinal run for the Texans.
Blend Avdili led the Mountain Lion bench with 13 points with five-of-seven shooting from the field and he added five rebounds. Wilford led the rebounding effort with six and contributed nine points.
Padiet Wang scored nine points in his best scoring performance as a true freshman in his weekend.
UCCS will return to Colorado for a non-conference, regional contest at Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. The ThunderWolves went 0-2 in their opening weekend in regional games against Rogers State and Arkansas-Fort Smith.
