SALT LAKE CITY –
Natasha Habert and
Alyssa Brinton finished with two of the top performances in University of Colorado Colorado Springs history for a four-set match to lead the Mountain Lions to a 3-1 win against Westminster in Behnken Field House. UCCS (9-7, 4-4 RMAC) won in 25-14, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-22 scores against the Griffins (2-14, 0-7 RMAC).
Habert recorded a career-high 34 digs in the third-best performance for a four-set match and sixth-best for any match in UCCS history. It was the best defensive performance for a Mountain Lion since 2005 and the best since the points needed to win a set moved from 30 to 25 points in 2008. She has two of the top seven single-match performances in program history after a 33-dig performance against Texas Woman's earlier this season.
Brinton recorded 12 kills in the fourth set and finished the match with 26. It was the fourth-most in a four-set match in program history and No. 10 in any match. She hit .455 in the final set with 12 kills and two errors off of 22 attacks, and hit .393 in the match. Brinton also made 11 digs and three blocks on defense.
The Mountain Lions hit greater than .300 in the three sets it won, and the .264 match percentage was the best in a conference contest since .317 in last season's road match at Westminster. UCCS made a season-high 13 blocks, led by six from
Lauren Brown.
UCCS never trailed in the first set and only let Westminster score back-to-back points three times in the opening period in the 25-14 win. The Griffins led at 2-1 and 3-2 early in the second set before the Mountain Lions retook the lead and finished the set on a 6-1 run to take a 2-0 match lead on a 25-19 decision.
Habert had 26 digs through the end of the third set, which would have marked a new UCCS three-set program record, but a 9-1 Westminster rally allowed the Griffins to win the third set at 25-22. The Mountain Lions assembled a 17-4 run in the fourth set to reach match point at 24-20 and Brinton secured the win with a kill in the 25-20 set victory.
Morgan Evans recorded her sixth 50-assist match this season with 54. She moved into fifth in UCCS career records and has 2,365. Evans needs 48 more to tie for fourth in Mountain Lion history.
UCCS will remain on the road for a match on Friday, Oct. 14, at Colorado State-Pueblo. The ThunderWolves won the first meeting of the season in a 3-2 decision last Friday in Colorado Springs.
