Morgan Evans moved into fourth in program career assists records and distributed the ball in a balanced offensive attack as the Mountain Lions (10-7, 5-4 RMAC) earned a 3-1 win against Colorado State-Pueblo (7-11, 5-4 RMAC) tonight at Massari Arena. UCCS avenged an earlier loss to the ThunderWolves with 25-23, 25-22, 26-28 and 25-21 set scores.
Evans finished with 50 assists and pushed her career total to 2,415 to pass Adrienne Epple in the all-time standings. She needs 351 to move into a tie for third with Jessica Stewart. Evans also made seven digs and three blocks on defense tonight.
A kill from
Taylor Hamilton in the first set started a 6-1 rally for the Mountain Lions to turn an 18-17 deficit into a 23-19 lead. UCCS held set point at 24-20, and the ThunderWolves made it a one-point set at 24-23 before
Alyssa Brinton closed out the set with a kill as the Mountain Lions took the early match lead on a 25-23 decision.
UCCS opened the second set with a 5-1 run and used an 8-1 run later in the set to double-up Colorado State-Pueblo at 16-8. The ThunderWolves scored the next five to narrow the Mountain Lion down to 16-13 before UCCS gradually opened a 24-19 lead. CSU-Pueblo rallied again with three straight points to make it 24-22 until Hamilton finished the set with a kill in a 25-22 victory.
The teams traded rallies early in the third set and then individual points before CSU-Pueblo scored four straight to build an 18-14 advantage. The ThunderWolves led 23-19 until Brinton's kill sparked a four-point swing that tied the match at 23-23. CSU-Pueblo held set point twice at 24-23 and 25-24 before UCCS scored back-to-back to reach match point at 26-25. The ThunderWolves scored the next three to finish the set in an extended period at 28-26.
The fourth set featured 13 ties and six lead changes until
Grace Nelson started the match-winning 5-1 run with a kill. UCCS recorded its best hitting performance of the night in the final set to secure the match victory on a 25-21 set win.
Brinton led the Mountain Lions with 17 kills and added four blocks. Nelson added 13 kills, one off of her season-high, and
Taylor Hamilton made 12 kills and six blocks.
Cassidy Bush rounded out the top hitters with 11 kills in her best four-set performance since the season-opening weekend against Northwest Oklahoma.
Anabela Cagen matched Hamilton's six blocks as UCCS recorded its second straight match with 13 team blocks.
UCCS will be back on the road on Saturday for a 6 p.m., match at New Mexico Highlands. The Cowgirls (5-9, 2-7) dropped a 3-2 match to MSU Denver tonight.
