SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team earned a 3-0 road win against Westminster on Friday as they continue their push to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament.
The Mountain Lions took the lead in the 14
th minute with
Alex Vonholle's fifth goal of the season, which came off of a cross from
Blake Barnes into the area. With the goal, the freshman is now tied with
Jake McAllister with a team-leading 11 points (5 goals, 1 assist).
Cort Searls and
Jake Demerath extended the lead in the second half with goals coming in the 55
th and 64
th minutes respectively. Searls' goal came in the form of a penalty kick. The senior is now 2 of 2 from the penalty spot this season.
In goal,
David Meyer earned his eight shutout of the season after making four saves for UCCS.
As a team, the Mountain Lions outshot Westminster 10 to 5 as UCCS placed five of their shots on frame.
UCCS improved to 9-5-1 overall and 8-3 in the RMAC with the result and have now won seven of their last eight games.
The team is back in action this Sunday when they travel to take on No. 14 Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
NOTES:
- UCCS is 2-2-1 against nationally-ranked opponents this season and will face their sixth ranked team on Sunday.
- Vonholle, a freshman, leads the Mountain Lions with five goals.
- Eight of Meyer's nine wins have been shutouts this season.
