Program-Record First Half Leads to Big Road Win

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs scored a program-record 61 first half points and four Mountain Lions scored at least 10 points as the Mountain Lions (11-9, 8-5 RMAC) earned a 93-66 win at Black Hills State (9-8, 7-6 RMAC) in the Young Center. Dalton Patten earned his fourth double-double of the season while Alex Welsh led the scoring with 22 points.

UCCS used a 34-1 run during a 10-minute stretch in the first half to take a 49-13 lead with four minutes to play in the half. The Mountain Lions shot 71 percent from the field (22-31) and 64 percent from the three-point line (9-14) for the 61-20 halftime lead against the Yellow Jackets. It was the largest first half scoring output in program history and the fifth-best for any half.

The Mountain Lions led by as many as 46 points in the second half at 77-31 with 12:46 to play. The reserves played for most of the final 10 minutes for UCCS in the 27-point win that ranked as the eighth-largest margin of victory in program history.

Welsh finished with his third straight 20-point game and his sixth in the last seven games with eight-of-12 shooting. He recorded six rebounds on defense and pushed his career total to 775 tonight. Welsh needs 25 rebounds to tie, and 26 to break, the UCCS career rebounding record.

All of Patten's double-doubles have come in the last four Saturdays and he extended his perfect free throw shooting streak to four games with five-of-five tonight. He was six-of-seven from the field and made a season-high three assists. Tim Haas also scored 17 points and made two steals. Elijah Ross added 12 points with a five-of-seven field performance and six rebounds.

UCCS shot 58 percent (33-57) from the field and 50 percent (12-14) at the three-point line. The Mountain Lions made nine steals as a team for the best performance in a conference game this season and held a double-digit rebounding advantage (43-28, +15) for the ninth time this season.

The Mountain Lions will return home on Jan. 29-30, for a Friday game against Western New Mexico (1-17, 1-12 RMAC) and a Saturday game against New Mexico Highlands (11-8, 10-3 RMAC). Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m., in the Gallogly Events Center.
