Hernandez Records Second Straight Double-Double as UCCS Sweeps Weekend

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs closed out the first half with a 15-0 run to build a 37-17 halftime lead and continued for a 72-58 victory at Adams State (2-8, 1-6 RMAC) in Plachy Hall. Brittany Hernandez led both teams with 20 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Jen Vigil made two early three-pointers as UCCS (8-5, 4-3 RMAC) opened the game with a 10-2 run. The Grizzlies narrowed the Mountain Lion lead down to three points early in the second quarter at 16-13 before UCCS scored 21 of the next 25 points for the 37-17 halftime lead. The Mountain Lions shot 52 percent from the field and were a perfect eight-of-eight at the free throw line in the first half.

Vigil and Hernandez scored all the points in a nine-point rally for UCCS in the third quarter to open a 50-22 lead with 4:04 left in the third quarter. Adams State narrowed the game in the fourth quarter and outscored the Mountain Lions in the fourth quarter 28-12.

Hernandez scored half of her points in the third quarter in her second straight double-double and her fourth of the season. She added another four assists for the Mountain Lion offense. Vigil made seven steals and scored 14 points, and Gabby Ramirez scored 10 points to lead the bench.

The Mountain Lions finished with a 46-28 rebounding advantage for the largest margin since the season-opener against Oklahoma Christian. UCCS outrebounded both opponents this weekend by an average of 15.5. The Mountain Lions also shot 44 percent tonight and averaged 48 percent this weekend.

UCCS will begin a four-game home stretch on Jan. 8, in a 5:30 p.m., game against Westminster. The Mountain Lions won 69-58 in the first meeting between the two teams on Dec. 12, in Salt Lake City.
