UCCS Rally Falls Short at Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs seniors Alex Welsh and Dalton Patten both finished with double-doubles and the Mountain Lions finished with a 56-29 rebounding advantage, but UCCS came up short in a 79-75 loss to Adams State tonight in Plachy Hall. Welsh led both teams with 26 points and 15 rebounds.

The Mountain Lions (7-7, 4-3 RMAC) erased a 10-point deficit with 6:52 to play with an 11-0 run for a 67-66 lead with 3:29 to play. Elijah Ross converted on both free throws after a media timeout to put the Mountain Lions ahead at that mark. The Grizzlies regained a four-point lead before Kendall Godley converted on another two free throws with 51.2 seconds to play after Adams State's top scorer fouled out to pull UCCS within two points again at 75-73.

After the Grizzlies (5-7, 4-3 RMAC) made a layup with 25.5 seconds left, UCCS responded with a quick dunk from Godley four seconds later to make it a 77-75 game. The Mountain Lions were forced to foul to stop the clock, and the Grizzlies made two free throws to push the game back to two possessions at 79-75. UCCS had an opportunity to cut the lead with two three-pointers in the final 20 seconds, but couldn't get them to fall in the narrow finish tonight.

Welsh finished with his eighth 20-point game of the season and went 13-of-22 from the field. Patten recorded his first double-double since Feb. 22, 2014, with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Godley scored 19 and was 10-of-14 at the free throw line in his best scoring performance in a conference game in his career.

UCCS finished with 56 rebounds, the second-most in program history behind a 57-rebound performance against Colorado College on Feb. 6, 2001. The 27-rebound advantage against the Grizzlies was the largest for the Mountain Lions since Dec. 18, 2009 (+30 vs. CSU-Pueblo).

The Mountain Lions will return to Gallogly Events Center for the next four games and will start on Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m., against Westminster. UCCS won the first game between the two teams this season in an 81-68 victory on Dec. 12, in Salt Lake City.
