Pair of Double-Doubles Not Enough Against Ranked Colorado Mines

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Brittany Hernandez and Shannon Kelly both recorded doubles-doubles as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs led for the entire first half, but No. 24 Colorado Mines outscored the Mountain Lions 42-28 in the second half to earn a 59-55 decision against the Mountain Lions in the Gallogly Events Center. Hernandez led both teams with 23 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Hernandez had seven points and five rebounds in the first quarter as UCCS built an 18-11 lead against the Orediggers. The Mountain Lions committed only one turnover in the first 10 minutes. Kelly scored seven of the nine UCCS points in the second quarter and outscored the Orediggers on her own as the Mountain Lions enjoyed a 37-27 halftime lead.

The teams split control in the third quarter, with Colorado Mines on a 16-2 run in the first five minutes and UCCS put together an 11-point run during the final five minutes to retake a 45-40 lead at the end of the quarter. Hernandez scored 11 points in the third quarter with a five-of-six performance from the field.

The Orediggers put together a nine-point run to turn a 50-45 Mountain Lion into their own 54-50 advantage. Gabby Ramirez made it a one-point game at 54-53 with 4:34 to play, and Hernandez did so again with a jumper 1:40 to play, but the Mountain Lions couldn't regain the lead in the 59-55 loss to nationally-ranked Colorado Mines.

Hernandez finished with her sixth double-double of the season and her fourth in the last five games. Her four blocks tonight was her fourth straight with at least three in a game. Kelly scored 13 points and was six-of-six at the free throw line along with 12 rebounds. Ramirez added eight points off the bench.

UCCS will finish a four-game home stand on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m., game against Colorado Christian. The Cougars (11-3, 8-2 RMAC) won their seventh straight game tonight in a 65-46 victory at MSU Denver.
