Catlett Moves into Sixth in Career Kills as UCCS Falls to Belles

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Kim Catlett moved into sixth in University of Colorado Colorado Springs career kills records with a team-high 15, but the Mountain Lions (2-3) fell in four sets to Angelo State (6-0) tonight in the Gallogly Events Center. Scores went 22-25, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-23 in favor of the Belles.

The Mountain Lions assembled a 7-2 run early in the match to build an 8-4 advantage against Angelo State and force a Belle timeout. Angelo State tied the match at 16-16, but UCCS wouldn't surrender the lead and took the 1-0 match advantage on a 25-22 set victory. Catlett led a balanced offensive effort with four kills as six Mountain Lions finished with multiple kills in the set.

Angelo State scored the first two points of the second set and kept the lead even though the Mountain Lions threatened throughout the set by staying within three points for most of the action. UCCS narrowed a 21-18 deficit to 22-21, but the Belles evened the match with a 25-21 set decision. Angelo State took a 2-1 match lead after a 25-15 victory against UCCS in the third set.

The Mountain Lions used a 6-1 run early in the fourth set to take a 10-7 lead and maintained the lead until the Belles put together a 5-1 run for a 14-13 lead. UCCS scored the next three points to turn it into a 16-14 advantage and didn't trail until a late 6-1 rally by Angelo State. The Belles were one point away from the match decision at 24-20 before two kills from Catlett and a block from Taylor Hamiltion and Celeste Henderson made it a one-point set at 24-23. A kill from Angelo State secured the set and the match on the next point at 25-23.

Catlett's 15 kills increased her career total to 979 to move her past UCCS Hall of Fame hitter Audrey Nelson's 974. Catlett needs 21 kills to become the sixth Mountain Lion with 1,000 career kills and 30 to tie for fifth in all-time records. She made 16 digs on defense and needs three more to move into a tie for fourth in career charts.

Cassidy Bush made five blocks on defense along with 11 kills. Morgan Evans recorded 35 assists with 18 digs and Taylor Hamilton rounded out the offensive leaders with 12 kills.

The Mountain Lions will remain at home for the 2015 Steel & Silver Classic this weekend. The classic opens Thursday night with a 7 p.m., match between UCCS and St. Edward's. The Hilltoppers went 2-2 at a home classic last weekend and will play Oklahoma Panhandle State on Wednesday night.
