UCCS Opens Steel & Silver Classic with Sweep of St. Edward's

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Cassidy Bush made a career-high five service aces and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs trailed for only one point in a 3-0 sweep of St. Edward's tonight in the Gallogly Events Center. The Mountain Lions (3-3) won with 25-18, 25-19 and 25-16 set scores.

Bush's five service aces tied for the second-most in a three-set match and eighth for all matches in UCCS records. She also tied for the second-best performance for a student-athlete in the Gallogly Events Center since the first volleyball matches in 2010. Bush also added six kills on offense and a block on defense for the Mountain Lions.

UCCS scored the first four points in the first set and opened the second set with a 6-1 run and never trailed the Hilltoppers in the first two frames. Bush recorded three of her five aces in the second set, including a pair back-to-back, for the early 2-0 match advantage.

The Mountain Lions trailed for one serve at 3-2 early in the third set, but recorded their best hitting performance of the night at .306 in the final period. Taylor Hamilton made a pair of solo blocks in the set and finished with a match-high four total blocks tonight.

Kim Catlett led both teams with 12 kills and added 13 digs on defense to move into fourth in career records with 1,131 digs in her career. She needs 341 to move into a tie for third with Melissa Clark. Natasha Habert led a balanced defensive effort with 14 digs and Morgan Evans finished with 31 assists and 10 digs.

The Steel & Silver Classic will continue Friday at 9 a.m., with action at both the Gallogly Events Center and at CSU-Pueblo's Massari Arena. UCCS will be back on the court on Friday at 2 p.m., for a contest against Tarleton State.
