Kim Catlett became the sixth Mountain Lion in program history to surpass 1,000 career kills as the Mountain Lions split on the second day of the 2015 Steel & Silver Classic. UCCS (4-4) completed the 3-2 comeback victory against Tarleton State before a loss to No. 9 Washburn to end the night.
The first three sets against the Texanns in the afternoon needed to go past the 25 points needed to win as the teams tied each other 41 times and exchanged the lead 19 times in those sets. Tarleton won the first two sets 34-32 and 25-24 before UCCS recorded its first set victory in the third with a 25-24 win.
UCCS never trailed in the fourth set for a convincing 25-18 victory to force the deciding fifth set. The Mountain Lions trailed 10-9 in the set before scoring six of the final seven points to claim a 15-11 set win and the 3-2 match victory. It was Tarleton's second five-set match of the day after a 3-2 loss to Missouri Western in the morning match.
Catlett surpassed the 1,000 mark in the match with 25 and added three service aces and 12 digs. The 25 kills rank seventh in a five-set match in program history and No. 10 for all matches.
Cassidy Bush and
Taylor Hamilton both recorded eight blocks while Bush held the advantage in kills against Hamilton, 17-to-15.
Morgan Evans made 65 assists for the fifth-best performance in a five-set match and sixth in all matches.
The Mountain Lions took the opening set against Washburn after holding off an Ichabod set point at 24-23. UCCS scored four of the final five points to take the 27-25 win against Washburn. UCCS held a 19-15 advantage before the Ichabods assembled an 8-1 to make it a 23-20 deficit. A pair of blocks narrowed the set to a one-point score before Washburn scored the final two points to even the match at 1-1.
UCCS opened the third set with a 5-2 lead, but Washburn scored six straight points later in the set for a 12-9 advantage. The Mountain Lions rallied to within a point of the Ichabods twice at 15-14 and 20-19, but Washburn wouldn't give up the lead and took the set 25-21. Washburn won the match with a 25-19 decision in the fourth set.
Catlett moved into fourth in career kills with 20 in the nightcap and led the Mountain Lions with 19 digs on defense. She has 1,036 and moved past Jill Wrenn and Andrea Weedman. Catlett needs nine to tie Caroline Ottino for third in program records.Â
Hamilton made seven blocks and Bush added six blocks on defense as UCCS accumulated 14 team blocks. Hamilton recorded 11 kills on offense.
The Mountain Lions will close out their Steel & Silver Schedule with a single match on Saturday against Eastern New Mexico at 7 p.m. The Greyhounds are 2-0 in the classic with wins against Western State and St. Edward's.
