DENTON, Texas – University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior outside hitter
Kim Catlett recorded 21 kills in both matches today and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team as the Mountain Lions split the second day of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic today. The Mountain Lions fell in five sets to Texas A&M-Commerce before a victory sweep of Texas Woman's to close out the weekend schedule.
After falling behind of Commerce after the first set, the Mountain Lions used a six-point run at the start of the second set and finished with a 6-2 run to even the match on a 25-13 set victory. A pair of 5-1 runs in the third set opened up a 19-13 advantage for UCCS and the Mountain Lions took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-20 victory.
Commerce used its own six-point run in the fourth set to turn a 17-14 UCCS lead into a 20-17 Lion lead, and forced the fifth set with a 25-21 decision. The Mountain Lions took a 7-5 lead in the fifth set, but Commerce responded with a four-point run, and even though UCCS stayed within a point at 11-10, 12-11 and 13-12, Commerce scored the final two points of the match in a 15-12 decision.
Taylor Hamilton hit .444 with 14 kills along with Catlett's 21 kills to lead the Mountain Lion offense.
Natasha Habert recorded 19 digs to lead five Mountain Lions with double-digit digs and
Morgan Evans added 49 assists for UCCS.
The Mountain Lions never trailed in the first set with Texas Woman's for a 25-21 victory, and pushed through 14 ties for a 27-25 win in the second set. UCCS scored seven straight points in the third set off of six kills and a block for a 14-7 lead and continued for a 25-16 win for a three-set sweep of the Pioneers.
Catlett's 21 kills in the final match of the day is third in UCCS history for a three-set match and trails only Audrey Nelson's performances against Chadron State and Midwestern State in 2001. She improved her career total to 964 and needs 10 kills to move into a tie for sixth in program records. She averaged 5.44 kills and 4.25 digs during the weekend to earn her spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Natasha Habert made 21 digs to lead the defense for eighth in program history for a three-set match. Catlett and Evans both added 18 digs, and the 84 team digs were the most for a three-set match in program history. It surpassed the 81 digs against Slippery Rock from Sept. 1, 2000.
UCCS will return home for a busy home week starting on Tuesday against Angelo State at 6 p.m. The Steel and Silver Classic will begin on Thursday, Sept. 10, with a 7 p.m., match against St. Edward's.
