Mountain Lions Open Season in 3-1 Victory Against International

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After giving up an own goal, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs scored two goals within a seven-minute span and then added a third goal in the second half for a 3-1 season-opening victory against Texas A&M International tonight at Mountain Lion Stadium.

A Mountain Lion attempt to clear the ball in the 12th minute hit the crossbar and went in to provide the Dust Devils an early 1-0 advantage. UCCS evened the score less than four minutes later with a goal from Bailee Jameson into the upper left corner on a pass from Megan Avery, and then took the lead in the 23rd minute with a goal by Michaela Mansfield on the assist from Brooke Tominello. The Mountain Lions out-shot International 8-3 in the first half for a 2-1 halftime lead.

Taylor Braden pushed the UCCS lead to 3-1 with just more than 20 minutes to play and the Mountain Lion defense held the Dust Devils to one shot in the final half. UCCS controlled the possession throughout the half with 10 corner kicks to claim the sixth season-opening victory in the eighth year of the program.

Brandi Aresenault made three saves in her first career start at goalkeeper. Mansfield scored career goal No. 11 and moved within two goals of a tie for fourth in program career records.

UCCS will remain at home for a noon game against No. 16 Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday in Mountain Lion Stadium. Commerce defeated Western State 1-0 earlier today in Gunnison, Colo.
