COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A quick shot by
Taylor Braden after a blocked penalty kick broke a deadlocked game for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in a 1-0 upset victory against No. 16 Texas A&M-Commerce today at Mountain Lion Stadium. The goal early in the second overtime moved the Mountain Lions to 2-0 for the fifth time in program history.
UCCS and Commerce played even in regulation with UCCS holding an 8-7 shots-on-goal advantage, but the Mountain Lions used fresh players and constant offensive pressure to build momentum in the second half. UCCS outshot the Lions 3-1 and held a 2-0 corner kick advantage in the final 15 minutes of the half, but the Commerce defense pushed back each time to keep the score at 0-0 through regulation.
Five minutes of rest before the first overtime period helped Commerce limit the Mountain Lion offense to just two shots in the first period, but a shorter rest between overtime periods allowed UCCS to put together three shots in the first 82 seconds of the period. A hand ball within the box against Texas A&M-Commerce set up a penalty kick for
Brooke Tominello with 8:35 to play in the final overtime. The Lion goalkeeper made the save but couldn't control the rebound, and Braden regained control on the right side of the goal to put it into the far side of the net two seconds later for the 1-0 victory.
Braden's goal was her second of the season, and she was second on the team with four shots.
Michaela Mansfield led UCCS with five shots with three on goal.
Brandi Arsenault earned her first shutout in only her second game with seven saves to lead the Mountain Lion defense.
UCCS will continue its seven-game home stand with a game against Midwestern State on Sept. 11, at 5 p.m. The Mustangs went 1-1 in the opening weekend with a loss to Fort Lewis and a win against Colorado Mesa at home.
