COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs defense held No. 19 Colorado School of Mines to a season-low in shots, but the Orediggers used a goal with five minutes to play in a 1-0 decision today at Mountain Lion Stadium.
Josh Berntsson led the offense with four shots and two on goal for UCCS (4-3, 2-1 RMAC).
Both teams had opportunities to score, but passes into the box were broken up by both teams and neither team recorded a shot until the 21st minute of the game. Colorado Mines ended the half with an 8-4 shot advantage but the teams remained tied at 0-0.
The teams continued to play evenly in the second half before Mines took advantage of a free kick in the 85th minute. The Orediggers placed the kick from midfield to the right end line, where it was kicked back to the top of the box for a quick shot into the lower right side of the net. The Mountain Lions earned a corner kick in the 89th minute, but weren't able to convert in the 1-0 loss today.
UCCS will be on the road for a Wednesday night game at MSU Denver. The Roadrunners (5-2-1, 3-1 RMAC) defeated Colorado Christian 1-0 at home this afternoon.
