LAS VEGAS, N.M. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs junior
Michaela Mansfield scored two goals and moved into fourth in career records as the No. 20 Mountain Lions (5-2-1, 2-1-1 RMAC) earned a 2-1 victory at New Mexico Highlands (3-3-1, 1-1-1 RMAC) tonight at Perkins Stadium. It was the first road trip for UCCS after seven straight home games to start the season.
Mansfield scored the fourth-fastest goal in program history on a pass from
Lo Vyvlecka with her shot 2 minutes and 33 seconds into the game. It was the first shot of the game for either team, and UCCS built a 9-0 shot advantage before Highlands recorded its first shot in the 24th minute. The 1-0 lead held through the end of the first half.
Mansfield made it a 2-0 UCCS lead in the 56th minute of the game and moved her alone into fourth in UCCS records with career goal No. 14. She has four goals this season and is tied for ninth in program season records. It was also her fourth career game-winning goal to move her into a tie for third in UCCS records. Highlands scored its lone goal of the game in the 78th minute off of a penalty kick.
Highlands ended the game with a 19-16 shot advantage, but UCCS took eight shots on goal compared to six by the Cowgirls. Mansfield led both teams with five shots with four on goal.
Brandi Arsenault made five saves and moved into fifth in career saves with 39 this season.
The Mountain Lions remain on the road for a 12 p.m., game at CSU-Pueblo on Sunday. The ThunderWolves (4-2, 2-1 RMAC) defeated Western State 1-0 at home. The game will also mark the opening contest of the 2015-16 Steel & Silver Services, the all-sport competition between the two schools.
