COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs used a pair of goals off of set pieces on corner kicks to take an early 1-0 lead and then to break a 1-1 tie late in the game for a 2-1 victory against Newman today at Mountain Lion Stadium.
Conor Langenbahn scored the game-winning goal on a header in the 82nd minute in the final non-conference game of the season for the Mountain Lions (2-1).
It took the Mountain Lions just more than two minutes to score when
J.R. Calhoun scored his second goal of the season off a corner kick from
Sebastian Hertzberg. The Jets responded 13 minutes later with a goal in the box to tie the game at 1-1. UCCS outshot Newman 5-1 for the rest of the half and a 3-1 corner kick advantage as the teams remained tied at 1-1 at halftime.
The Jets lost one field player in the 40th minute due to a red card, but were able to maintain a strong offensive presence through the second half. UCCS earned a corner kick on the left side of the net in the 81st minute, but when the kick went out-of-bounds from a Newman student-athlete off the right side, it set up a second corner kick in the 82nd minute.
Josh Berntsson kicked across the box to Hertzberg, who headed it back in front of the net to Langenbahn for the goal into the right side. The goal marked the second game-winner for Langenbahn in his career as the 2-1 score held through the end of regulation.
Hertzberg's two assists matched the third-best performance in program history and moved him into a tie for No. 10 in program career records with 11 in his career. He made four shots along with
Cort Searls and
Jake McAllister as UCCS out-shot Newman 21-to-12.
Peter Vogrin made four saves in the net in his second start of the season.
UCCS will open the RMAC season on the road with a Friday game at Colorado Mesa at 7 p.m. The Mavericks (2-1-1) won 3-1 earlier today against West Texas A&M.
