LAKEWOOD, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs sophomore second baseman
Nikki Hoffman went three-of-six with two runs, but the Mountain Lions dropped both games of the day in a 6-5 loss to Western New Mexico and an 8-4 loss to Colorado Christian. UCCS (14-17 / 12-14 RMAC) remains in RMAC tournament contention with three weekends left in the regular season.
Dani Fonseca hit her 12th home run of the season in the fourth inning with a three-run shot to left field to put UCCS ahead of Western New Mexico 3-1 in the first game.
Emily Jennings hit a bases-loaded single to score
Makenna Smith and keep the Mountain Lions ahead of the Mustangs 4-2 in the top of the fifth inning.
UCCS pushed the lead to three runs in the top of the sixth inning with a double from
Kylie Barnard to score
Lexi Belligan from first. Western New Mexico rallied in the bottom of the inning to turn a 5-2 UCCS lead into a 6-5 Mustang advantage with a Mountain Lion miscue to score one run and then a three-run home run. Hoffman reached base on a leadoff walk in the seventh inning, but the Mustangs retired the next three Mountain Lions to claim the one-run decision.
Colorado Christian built a 3-0 advantage through the fifth inning with one-run performances in the first, second and fourth innings. UCCS scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning by taking advantage of a Cougar error, but Christian responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 8-2 advantage into the seventh.
Jordyn Cusimano scored on a single from Hoffman to cut the Cougar lead down to 8-3, and then
Whitney Weber scored to make it 8-4, but the Cougars secured the third out of the inning when Hoffman also tried to score on the same play.
Jennings went three-of-eight with three RBIs in the two games today. Fonseca was walked three times by Colorado Christian in the second game after she hit two home runs against the Cougars on Saturday.
Korey Kulpins took the loss in the first game and Fonseca the loss in the second game.
UCCS will go back on the road this weekend for a four-game series against MSU Denver on Saturday and Sunday. The Roadrunners (26-10 / 17-5 RMAC) went 3-1 against Fort Lewis last Friday and Saturday.
