DENVER, Colo. –
Stephanie Warhoe went three-of-four at the plate in the first game and the Mountain Lions earned hits from six different people in the second game as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (14-19 / 12-16 RMAC) fell in both games to No. 25 Metropolitan State University of Denver (28-10 / 19-5 RMAC) today at the Regency Athletic Complex. Scores went 4-0 in the first game and 12-3 in the second game for the Roadrunners.
UCCS loaded the bases in the first inning and put a runner into scoring position again in the second inning, but neither team would be able to score through the first three innings. The Mountain Lion defense allowed only one Roadrunner past first base on defense through the opening three frames.
MSU Denver scored its first runs on a two-run home run in the fourth inning and used back-to-back hits later in the inning to add a third run. Warhoe reached second in the fifth inning after a two-out single and walk to
Emily Jennings. Warhoe doubled in the seventh inning with two outs and advanced
Whitney Weber to third base, but UCCS wouldn't be able to score in either inning in the 4-0 decision.
The Roadrunners took a 2-0 advantage after two innings to start the second game before UCCS took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth. Weber lead off the inning with a single to the shortstop, and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Warhoe. Jennings reached on a walk on a 12-pitch plate appearance.
Tressa Radach scored Weber with a single through the right side, and then
Kylie Barnard scored Jennings with a double down the right-field line.
Lexi Belligan earned the walk to load the bases for
Makenna Smith, who drove in the third run of the inning with a single to left field. The Roadrunners replaced their pitcher, who secured the third out of the inning.
MSU Denver retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two runs for the 4-3 advantage. Jennings and
Dani Fonseca got onto second and third in the fifth inning with two outs before a groundout to second base. The Roadrunners scored eight runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the run-rule 12-3 decision in five innings.
Stephanie Chitkowski recorded her fifth complete game of the season in game one. Fonseca took the loss in the second game.
UCCS and MSU Denver will finish the series in a Sunday doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
