SPEARFISH, S.D. –
Nikki Hoffman finished the day with three hits and two runs but the University of Colorado Colorado Springs fell in both games at Black Hills State University today. The Yellow Jackets (11-34 / 6-28 RMAC) won in 10-6 and 7-0 games against the Mountain Lions (17-26 / 15-21 RMAC).
Hoffman scored the first run of the day in the first inning and the Mountain Lions took a 3-0 lead after the top of the second inning against Black Hills State. The Yellow Jackets cut the UCCS lead down to one run in the bottom of the third inning and then used seven hits to score seven runs in the fifth inning for a 9-3 advantage. Kylie Barnard hit her eighth home run of the season to bring the score to 10-6 in the top of the seventh. A ground out on the next batter ended the rally for the Mountain Lions in game one.
Dani Fonseca went two-of-three in the second game, and the Mountain Lions put runners on second and third in both the second and seventh innings but couldn't put the runners across home plate. Black Hills State scored in the second, fourth and fifth innings to claim the 7-0 decision in the second game.
Whitney Weber recorded her team-leading second triple of the season in the first game. Barnard moved into sixth in freshman season records in home runs.
Korey Kulpins pitched her first complete game of the season in the opening game while Fonseca earned the loss in the second game.
Hayley Miller recorded six strikeouts in three innings of relief and gave up no hits.
UCCS and Black Hills State will finish the four-game series with a Saturday doubleheader. Game times were moved an hour earlier to 11 a.m., and 1 p.m., to avoid forecasted rains.
