COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
Emily Jennings used a grand slam to tie the game in the sixth inning and a walkoff single from
Stephanie Warhoe drove in two runs as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs won the second game 11-10 against Chadron State today. The Mountain Lions (12-13 / 10-10 RMAC) dropped the first game 11-3 against the Eagles (7-23 / 7-11 RMAC) in the first game.
UCCS took advantage of a pair of Chadron State errors to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning of the second game.
Tressa Radach earned a pair of RBIs with a single to right field to score Jennings and
Nikki Hoffman in a bases loaded appearance.Â
The Eagles responded with a two-run home run in the top of the second inning, and then tied it with another two runs in the top of the fifth. The Eagles continued the scoring with four runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-4 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
Radach led off the inning with a single, and then
Rayle Glover took second after pinch running for Radach.
Makenna Smith reached base on a walk and both Mountain Lions moved to second and third on a single to right field by
Whitney Weber.
Paige Duncan drove in Glover but was out on the play on a putout from third base, but Hoffman walked on the next plate appearance to load the bases for Jennings. She got ahead in the count with two balls and then used the third pitch to send ball over the center field fence and tie the game at 9-9.
Dani Fonseca singled on the next appearance before the Eagles closed out the inning with a strikeout.
Chadron State retook the lead with a solo home run to right field in the top of the seventh, and UCCS put runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Warhoe hit a short single between the second baseman and the center fielder to score
Lexi Belligan from third and Weber from first for the game-winning runs and complete the comeback against the Eagles.
Both teams went down in order in the first inning of game one, but Chadron State scored in each of the remaining innings in the 11-3 decision to open the day. UCCS made it a two-run deficit at 4-2 with three straight hits in the bottom of the fourth to score Jennings and Fonseca, but the Eagles scored seven runs in the next three innings. The Mountain Lions loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out, and scored one run on an error, but hit into a double play to end the game.
The teams will finish a four-game series with a Sunday doubleheader. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
