Mountain Lions Split on Final Day with Chadron State

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs freshman Stephanie Warhoe hit her first two collegiate home runs in the second game as UCCS earned a 14-11 win in the final game of the series against Chadron State at Mountain Lion Field. The Mountain Lions (13-14 / 11-11 RMAC) fell in the first game of today's doubleheader 6-2 to the Eagles (8-24 / 8-12 RMAC).

Warhoe hit her first home run on the second pitch from the Eagles to start a three-run inning for the Mountain Lions. Dani Fonseca scored on a single from Lexi Belligan, and Belligan came home after Tressa Radach hit a single to right-center field. Chadron State responded with six runs in the second inning, helped by back-to-back home runs.

UCCS retook the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning, with three runs coming from Fonseca's ninth home run of the season. The Mountain Lions lead 7-6 after two complete, and Chadron State continued the back-and-forth game with a two-run home run in the top of the third for the 8-7 advantage.

Kylie Barnard took the first pitch of the bottom of the third inning over the fence in right-center field to tie the game at 8-8 after the inning. The UCCS defense worked itself out of a bases loaded situation in the fourth inning to keep Chadron state off the board and setup a six-run bottom of the fourth.

Belligan earned her second RBI of the day with a single to score Emily Jennings, and Belligan scored after MaKenna Smith singled to left field. A passed ball that was ruled dead after it went into the dugout area scored Tressa Radach, and Warhoe hit her second home run of the day with a three-run hit to deep center field.

UCCS was on the edge of a run-rule decision with the 14-8 lead after the fourth inning, but Chadron State narrowed the Mountain Lion lead with two runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh. Stephanie Chitkowski struck out two Eagles in the seventh, including the final out of the game on a swinging strikeout, to earn her sixth victory of the season.

The Mountain Lions scored one run on a wild pitch in the third inning of the opening game and held the 1-0 lead until a two-run home run put Chadron State ahead in the sixth inning. UCCS tied the game in the sixth when Fonseca doubled down the left field line to score Nikki Hoffman from third. The Eagles used three home runs in the top of the seventh to score four runs in the 6-2 decision to start the day.

Warhoe went four-of-five in the second game and finished the day five-of-eight at the plate. Stephanie Chitkowski struck out nine batters in the first game and four in the second to earn both decisions.

UCCS will be on the road next weekend in a Friday-Saturday series against Colorado Christian and Western New Mexico in Lakewood, Colo.
