UCCS Takes on Regis in Top-10 Regional Matchup

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will look for a quality regional victory to boost its NCAA postseason chances when the Mountain Lions (21-5 / 16-4 RMAC) take on Regis (15-9 / 11-9 RMAC) at 5 p.m., today at Regis. UCCS enters the game with a berth in the RMAC Tournament guaranteed, while Regis will be playing to get into the tournament with a win tonight.

UCCS is fourth in the latest NCAA committee South Central Region ranking, while Regis is No. 10 in the same ranking. The Rangers won the first game between the two teams 92-89 on Dec. 13, which snapped a six-game winning streak for the Mountain Lions. UCCS bounced back with an eight-game winning streak that lasted for more than a month and set up the Mountain Lions to break the single-season victory record last Saturday against Black Hills State.

UCCS will be looking at scores coming out of Grand Junction, Colo., this weekend, where Colorado Mesa takes on Adams State tonight and Fort Lewis on Saturday. The Mountain Lions are a game behind the Mavericks in the standings, and if UCCS and Colorado Mesa are tied in the standings after Saturday, UCCS would be the No. 1 seed for the RMAC Tournament next week.

The Mountain Lions and Rangers are the top two scoring teams in the RMAC, although UCCS is outscoring the Rangers by nearly 10 points per game. Three of the top four individual scorers in the conference will be on the same court tonight. RMAC-leader Abby Kirchoff is the only student-athlete in the conference averaging more than 20 points per game and Brittany Hernandez is third with 17.8 points per game. Bay'lee Purdy is leading Regis with 15.4 points per game and is fourth in the league.

Hernandez leads the RMAC with 9.2 rebounds per game, 49.8 percent from the field and with 2.1 blocked shots per game. Gabby Ramirez is first in the league with a 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio. Purdy and Kirchoff are both shooting better than 90 percent at the free throw line this season and are ranked in the top three in the conference in that category.

The Rangers can secure a spot in the RMAC Tournament with a victory tonight and have won eight of the last nine games against UCCS when playing in the Regis Fieldhouse.  The Rangers are 9-2 at home this season, but suffered an 83-75 loss to MSU Denver in their last home game Feb. 14.

Fans will be able to follow tonight's action for free with live stats through Regis and with live audio through UCCS. Live pay-per-view video streaming will be provided through America One Sports.
